Carole Carrera Davis was born in Washington, D. C. and grew up in Arlington, Virginia. She studied art and art history at Mary Washington College and completed her art degree at VA Tech after moving to Blacksburg in 1971. She has painted with transparent watercolors and other water-soluble media for over 25 years, and has exhibited her work in solo and group shows throughout the state. She has also exhibited her work in national juried shows such as The National Works on Paper Competition, National Watercolor Oklahoma, Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors, Mid-Atlantic Regional Watercolor Exhibition, and in state shows such as Rappahannock Regional Exhibition and the Virginia Watercolor Society's annual show with awards and special recognition in many of these exhibitions. Her focus for the past several years has been flowers as they grow in the garden. This garden celebration began as a result of her involvement in The New River Valley Master Gardeners Association. Earlier subjects in her paintings were lush, tropical plants and foliage but without the image of a flower. By including the blossom, she creates a different focus and a more colorful palette. As with her tropical paintings, composition and color continue to be Ms. Davis' strongest focus. She builds rich color areas using a series of transparent glazes allowing the paint to dry before applying the next layer of paint. These dramatic contemporary paintings create an impact that invites the viewer to look more closely at patterns and detail. She likes her paintings to entertain whether seen from 15 feet or 15 inches. Two of Ms. Davis' tropical paintings have been published in The Best of Watercolor Painting: Painting Composition and The Best of Watercolor Painting: Painting Color by Rockport Publishers and she is listed in recent editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who of American Women. Her art is included in corporate collections in Virginia and North Carolina and in private collections in the United States and Europe. She promotes the arts locally through her involvement in the Blacksburg Regional Art Association and she enjoys sharing her love of watercolor with talented and gifted students of all ages.
